The Delegation were welcomed to the Northern Territory by Professor Marcia Langton and some of her staff at the Centre for Indigenous Natural and Cultural Resource Management (CINCRM) of the Northern Territory University (NTU). CINCRM seeks to carry out activities based on a number of complementary themes, each of which is crucial to sustainable development and resource management, and each of which has common roots in indigenous knowledge systems. Each theme contributes to research, research training and curriculum development. These research themes address issues such as:-

  • contemporary Aboriginal approaches to natural and cultural resource management and biodiversity conservation
  • customary rights and interests, ecologically and economically sustainable fisheries, aquaculture and wildlife utilisation
  • governance, policy and legal issues
  • community development and infrastructure
  • cultural mapping and geographic information systems
  • indigenous tourism
  • language, culture and education, including pathways for indigenous students within the Australian higher education system
From the airport we were taken to the beach at Casuarina where we were photographed and interviewed by the media. That evening they enjoyed a barbeque with members of the university and staff from CINCRM at the Northern Australian Research Unit of the Australian National University.
