After a dawn rise from our 'swags' (bedrolls) we were taken to the homestead on Mount Anderson station. We were particularly interested to see cattle again and talk about livestock management after a week away from home. Robert Watson, Manager of the station, described how the indigenous community had acquired the station in an exhausted state and the challenge they face in building it up to support the community again. We were impressed by his understanding of his country and the sympathy with which he wanted to manage it. We shared his desire to manage the land in harmony with the plants and animals found there and find a way to make it economically viable without stripping it of it's productive potential. Kamali Land Council, Derby From the station the Delegation drove back to Derby and visited the offices of Kamali Land Council where we were received by its Joint Chairman, Paddy Neowarra, and anthropologist, Tony Redmond. They described how the Council is acting for the three Aboriginal communities of Nyarinyan, Worrorra and Wonumbul peoples. We were for the first time able to understand the importance of visual cultural expression as a link to country when we were shown examples of Aboriginal paintings featuring Windjana images and stone art in the landscape. Before we left for Broome we watched a traditional dance by peoples of the area. |
