On our way into the West Kimberley region a stop was made at the offices of the Kimberley Land Council in Derby. Here we were given lunch and received by Howard Pederson, Policy and Research Officer, who described the work of the Council in the Derby area. He invited Kim Doohan, the anthropologist who acted as Expert Witness in the Miriuwung Gajerrrong case and is currently researching with Wilfred Goonak an Elder of the Wonumbul people on the Mitchel Plateau in the North Kimberley area. She described her role in articulating the relationship between traditional owners and their land and showed us examples including maps of their country and genealogies that were submitted as evidence in the courts. Jarlmadangar Burru Community Afterwards we were taken to the Jarlmadangar Community on land adjacent to Mount Anderson station, which had recently been acquired by the traditional land owners with a state grant. There we met with Antony Watson, community leader and his father John Watson, former Chairman of KLC, and uncle Harry Watson, who is reputed to have been the finest stockman in the Kimberleys. Antony Watson told us how the community was established and what they its members were hoping for in the future. We were impressed with the level of commitment and application to build up the community infrastructure to a high standard. We spent the night in the community and enjoyed spending time informally with its members. |
