Kaloomah Perhaps not surprisingly the Delegation preferred to visit a commercial cattle property in preference to attending an Australian rules football match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as was originally planned. At Kaloomah near Yarck in north eastern Victoria we were briefed by the farm managers, Dane and Ingrid Martin, on the purebred Hereford commercial cattle enterprise operation on the property. We were struck by the size of a bull that had been put in the yard for our inspection as well as the high stocking rates and coordinated calving regime practiced. On a tour of the farm we saw wild kangaroos for the first time which took the pressure of the organisers. It rained nearly all the time we were there and like all Australian cattlemen we regarded this as a blessing. That evening we stayed in converted shearing quarters on a neighbouring property called Brilliant which sort of sums up our time enjoying proximity to cattle again. |
