Perth All 9 members of the African Delegation arrived in Perth as scheduled. This was something of a small miracle of organization and a reflection of the interest the delegates have for what is on offer to them in Australia. It is hoped over the next weeks that they will forge some kind of union and benefit from the unity of purpose they now all recognize. The visit started formally at a church service. It was the idea of Canon Frank Sheehan, Director of the
Centre for Ethics at Christ Church Chapel in Perth to hold a service around the issue of landrights prompted
by the delegation’s visit. It was perhaps also important to start the visit with a reflection of those
things that unite us all. He invited Mr. Fred Collard, Co-ordinator of Australians for Reconciliation,
to provide the welcome - which he did in his native Nyoongar language. The gospel was read by the Honorable
Kim Beazley OA., former Federal Minister for Education and Member for Fremantle in the House of
Representatives. A prayer of the Dakota nations was read, and the homily was given by a delegation member,
Hon Matei olle Timan, Member of Parliament for Ngorongoro district in Tanzania. |
