National Centre for Development Studies, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, Australian National University The delegates attended a workshop at the Australian National University to which a range of Australian researchers and others with interests in pastoralism and legal issues related to indigenous land title and land management had been invited. It gave us an opportunity to share ideas and impressions from the recent visits to the Kimberley and the Northern Territory. Dr Elspeth Young, Director of Studies Environmental Management and Development, chaired the meeting. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) The delegation then visited the offices of ATSIC where we met with Brian Stacy (Coordinator of the Wik Task Force), Philip Muttukumaru (Manager of the Native Title Policy and Legislation) and other staff members who work on Native Title issues. We were given a brief background of the problem of Native Title and the role of ATSIC in representing Aboriginal people in this context. Paper : ATSIC'S ROLE AS A NATIONAL BODY High Court of Australia The delegates were invited to the High Court of Australia where we were received by the Marshal, Lex Howard, and the Executive Assistant to the Chief Justice, Patrick Keyzer. The High Court of Australia is the highest court in the Australian judicial system and its functions are to interpret and apply the law of Australia; to decide cases of special federal significance including challenges to the consitutional validity of laws and to hear appeals, by special leave, from Federal, State and Territory courts. The delegates were particularly interested to visit the court where the Mabo judgement was handed down and enjoyed the opportunity of discussing the implications of that case and all that has followed with someone from the Chief Justice's chambers. |
